The project consisted of designing an extension for a 1950s mansion that was in keeping with the character and high quality of the original architecture and did not detract from the beautiful park-like setting. Our goal was to come up with a concept that refers to the design vocabulary of the 1950s while giving it a contemporary twist.
The solution was a pagoda-like extension that echoes the shapes in its surroundings and yet breaks free from them. The gentle southward curve of the original building is repeated in the new structure’s roof and floor.
