Anne Frank Comprehensive School

EDUCATION

In competition, this design convinced the jury thanks to the following qualities: »The overall structure of the school building is particularly impressive, above all the design of the entrance area, which creates a direct spatial connection between the old school building and the large, open hall. The school’s two-storey structure is pleasant and pedagogically valuable. The free arrangement of the floor plan creates very attractive spaces with an extremely appealing atmosphere. We were particularly impressed by the visual connection within the entrance hall, both from the ground floor and especially from the first floor gallery, to the old school building, which underlines spatially and optically the “bringing together” function of the comprehensive school as an institution. […]

The building and the exterior grounds merge with each other, reflecting the school’s daily routine.« (Extract from the jury’s report.)

The gymnasium and the new school building form a prominent architectural ensemble that enriches the cityscape. The building can be entered from the playground or from the car park on the opposite side. The gymnasium and the changing rooms are staggered; this serves a functional purpose, leaving space above for stands for spectators and space below for equipment rooms. The foundation of the two-tiered gymnasium is partially below ground level, a design feature which made it possible to create exceptional landscape design elements.
