Siemes Logistics Centre

INDUSTRY

Shoe manufacturer Siemes chose the former Westmark textile factory in Mönchengladbach as the location for its logistics centre. Shoes are prepared for delivery here before being distributed to over
130 branches across Europe. The project set us the interesting challenge of developing the existing traditional architecture to create a building that would meet the needs of an ultra-modern logistics centre. Important design concerns included creating access routes that would allow goods to be received smoothly and at the required frequency and structuring loading bays where large trucks would be able to load up quickly and easily.

Within the building, we set up conveyor belts next to the designated storage area for goods awaiting delivery. This eases the burden on employees. The construction work took place alongside the day-to-day running of the factory to eliminate downtime.

The interplay between the new façade and the building’s historical character creates a harmony between the architecture of the 19th and 21st centuries. The building’s new aluminium façade with few openings evinces its simple function as a storage space and goods delivery and pick-up point.
