St Mary’s Church

CULTURE

Our plan was to give the church a modern, lighter appearance. To this end, we reduced the architecture of the church interior to a minimalistic layout and emphasised the central axis of the nave. The wall facing the belfry was opened to let natural light in; this has enlivened the central axis, which faces the altar. The organ is now located within this light axis.

Using light materials and a glass back panel, we have designed a near-translucent instrument that matches the new atmosphere of the room and aesthetically blends into the architecture. Backlit, textile-covered frames place further emphasis on the walls of the transept and create a soft, diffuse light. The altar has been moved further into the church room, and the number of pews inside the transept has been reduced.

CLIENTS

»Places of salvation heal the soul. I am eternally grateful to the creativity of Dr Schrammen, which I got to experience first hand during the conversion of two churches. The new liturgical space that was built in St Marien emphasises what is essential with its focused clarity and bright beauty. Here, people meet God and each other! In St Josef, the message of Christ’s resurrection is made visible. The colours of the gravestones bring the light of the church windows into its interior, making it a comforting and vibrant space. And an olive tree bears witness to the triumph of life!«
